Rotational Malalignment
Dong Hoon Lee
Rotational Deformity
When the bone is twisted like a screw, we call it rotational malalignment.
It differs from simple bowlegs or knock-knees caused by angular deformity.
Rotational deformity accompanies in-toeing or out-toeing gait. However, it is not an orthopaedic problem, with the exception of severe cases. If someone who wishes to correct angular deformity (bowlegs or knock-knees) also has rotational deformity, both should be corrected to ensure top quality results.
Another case of rotational deformity is rotational malalignment syndrome. In this case, both the femur and tibia have rotational deformity. It does not require correction in most cases, but correction is considered when patella dislocation occurs.
