Rickets are due to a deficiency of minerals (calcium and phosphate) which makes bones fragile and curved.
It may also be a result of a Vitamin D deficiency or certain drugs. Lately, rickets are increasing as more premature babies are being born and breast-feeding periods are getting longer.
Rickets are diagnosed with x-rays and blood tests. Curved bone deformity appears, as evidence of weak bone. Drug treatment is the first step and then deformity correction is considered in orthopaedics.
